Essay

The Serbian and Croatian 19th century studies in the interwar Yugoslavia has been regarded for the first time in Ukrainian historiography. The emphasis has been laid of the main approaches to the period of the national revival developed by the Yugoslav scholars before the First World War. There were established basic principles of the historical concept dominating Serbian and Croatian historiography in early 20th century. Interpretations of the crucial issues during the interwar period were changed as the academic community has gradually defined their attitude to the Yugoslavian ideology. Our research of attitudes of scientific historiography to the Yugoslavian idea as a basic determining cultural concept in a domestic political situation between the World wars reveals both the ruling elites ambiguous attempt at implementation of the Yugoslavian ideology, and the lack of any uniform and systematic work in this direction.
