The object of the research is English one-word idioms.The aim of the research is a comprehensive analysis of systemic and functional peculiarities of English one-word idioms. The methods: the methods of derivation, seme, contextual analysis, the methods of word-building and frame modelling, a dictionary definition method, the method of modelling the actual meaning of idioms, the method of conceptual metaphor and metonymy, interpretative method.The scientific novelty - the notion of one-word idioms as well as its place in the English idiomatic subsystem have been elaborated for the first time in the domestic linguistics. The paper provides structural, idiographic and stylistic classifications and highlights the semantic peculiarities of one-word idioms as well as their basic cognitive mechanisms. The research establishes functional-pragmatic peculiarities of one-word idioms in the publicistic discourse.The theoretical value of the research is defined by the fact that its results and conclusions are the contribution to the development of anthropological linguistics, semantics, the theory of cognitive metaphor, the theory of discourse, linguistic pragmatics and stylistics of the English language.The practical value - the results can be used in practical lexicography, lexicology, stylistics, practical courses on linguistic pragmatics, social linguistics, cognitive linguistics, the theory of discourse, practical English, translation as well as in the scientific research of students and postgraduates.
