Essay

The dissertation is devoted to researching the problems of evolution of the vocal cycle of Austrian-German tradition and the regularities of cycle formation exemplified by compositions of R. Schumann in the late period of his creative work, H. Wolf, A. Schoenberg in his early period. The position of the vocal cycle has been substantiated in the light of the theoretical concept of genre- and form-building in vocal music. The notion of “musical-poetical stanza” has been introduced into scientific circulation. The idea of a vocal-song cyclization has been proved to result from dialectics of integrity of differences, which governs the process of musical form-building. The notion of “artistic-conceptual space-time of vocal cycle” offered reflects both the general properties of cyclicity (cyclic closure, repetition chains) and its specific nature at the level of synthesis of music and lyrics, where both musical and lyrics cyclicities interact. An original definition of the vocal cycle as a plot-like musical-poetical composition has been developed.
