Essay

This dissertation focuses on the study of semantic and pragmatic properties of derivative substantives with the categorial meaning of quality in modern German, focusing on their word-forming peculiarities. Such substantives with their common categorial semantics and word-forming formants (suffixes -e, -esse, -heit, -keit, -igkeit, -(i)taet, -ung, -schaft, -tum, -ismus, -ment, -anz/-enz, -erei, -elei; prefixes miss-, un-, dis-) are characterized by the following features: similar part of speech status, the meaning of thingness and abstractedness, common semantic category of quality, different types of semantic relations between derivative and productive units with the affixes performing the functions of transposition, mutation and modification. Paradigmatic relations between the derivative units based upon integral and differential, semantic and word-forming components constitute the ground for singling out lexical and word-forming, as well as word-forming proper variants of derivative substantives, alongside with word-forming synonyms and semantic groups denoting the physical properties and outward characteristics, abstract notions and phenomena of social character socially determined.
