Essay

The aim of the dissertation: to establish the specificity of gender stereotypes presentation by means of gender marked free attributive phrases in the contemporary British newspaper discourse. The object of the research: gender marked free attributive phrases of male and female reference in the contemporary British newspaper discourse. The novelty of the thesis: the dissertation shows the specificity of nominative function of the gender marked free attributive phrases; defines their semantic, pragmatic, ideographic and cognitive characteristics which supply them with regulative function; the paper establishes configuration of masculine and feminine gender roles as constituents of stereotypes reflected by the phrases and singles out metaphor correlates which provide a basis for image-bound conceptualisation of their referents. The methods: syntagmatic analysis, component analysis, mapping, cognitive-discursive interpretation, semantic-associative analysis and quantitative analysis.The theoretical value: the theses and conclusions of the dissertation are a contribution into the development of Cognitive Linguistics, Linguistic Axiology, the Theory of Metaphor, Gender Linguistics and Theory of Discourse. The practical value: in lecture courses in Lexicology, Stylistics, Theoretical Grammar of the English Language, specialized courses in Cognitive and Gender Linguistics.
