This thesis deals with one of the key problems of contemporary cognitive poetics - metaphorical concept and its role in structuring the author's world picture within the English and Ukrainian poetical texts. The paper reveals the cognitive ground of natural elements metaphorization from linguistic, cultural, historical and comparative perspectives. The ways of basic metaphors actualization and main cognitive mechanisms of creating modificated metaphorical concepts in English and Ukrainian poetical texts have been defined. Methods and principles of comparative analysis of metaphorical conceptualization of natural elements in English and Ukrainian have been implemented; metaphorical concepts have been classified into metaphorical fields and networks due to their cognitive, semantic and functional potential, central and peripheral metaphorical concepts within each field have been identified. The comparative description of linguistic means of actualization metaphorical meaning and cognitive ground of their actualization in poetical texts has proved the existence of common natural elements metaphors potential in English and Ukrainian as well as national and cultural differences of their functioning within non-related languages
