Object - process of sharpening wood-cutting knifes by new multi-cup grinding instrument. Aim - improvement of productivity of the sharpening process of wood-cutting knifes by straight cutting edge. Methods - methods of mathematic theory of planning the experiment, morphological analysis, mathematic modeling of processes, statistic processing of results, regressive analysis, electronic temperature measurement, measurement of micro-hardness, micro-structure and chemical heterogeneity, measurement of speed and pressure of air flow in the grinding area. Scientific novelty: knifes sharpening is improved due to the use of developed new multi-cup grinding instrument that leads to an improved cooling and better processing quality of sharpening surface of the knife and therefore the productivity of that process is enhanced. Further development of balance principles of grinding instrument was obtained. The importance of the disbalance coefficient was established depending on the turning angle of corrective masses. The calculation programme of balance parameters was developed for the first time, as well as the dependency of the temperature on the processed knife surface on sharpening regimes was established. The link between the speed of sharpening cup and the feed of cutting of the grinding wheel that ensures the high productivity and quality of knifes sharpening. Results: new construction of multi-cup grinding instrument was developed with turning cups; sharpening regimes for wood-cutting knifes by new grinding instrument were developed that allow for enhancing process productivity without lowering processing quality; new method of full automatic balancing of grinding wheels was proposed that will decrease the vibration of the instrument while processing on the bench and will improve the quality of sharpening process. Implementation level - introduction of developed sharpening regimes of wood-cutting knifes by multi-cup grinding instrument at enterprises confirms their effectiveness and the objectivity of deducted conclusions obtained as a result of the research.
