Essay

The thesis focuses on Robert Graves, creative activity in poetry, prose, history, theories of myth and poetic imagination, also in current literary criticism. This influential XX century English writer and his basic myth-poetic conception are given a fresh, complex interpretation in the thesis. The conception is traced back to academic and criticist schools of anthropologism, ritualism, myth criticism. It is proved to be a syncrete philological and lyrical phenomen, both myth-remaking and myth-transforming. This interrelated and interdepend and process is analyzed in diverse conceptual and textual aspects subject, plots, characters, chronotops, leading symbols and tropes. Graves' dominant myth-remaking strategies are defined as selecting his favourite "mono-myths", their adapting as poetic subjects, then their actualizing in text plots and text structures. His myth-transforming instruments are termed as changing forms and functions of a primary myth into forms and functions of a modern lyrical piece by its deconstruction and new conceptualization. Such syncrete melt of humanitarian erudition and poetic insight is regarded to be the main reason for Graves' growing presence in present-day European literary and academic background.
