Essay

The dissertation is devoted to intertextual and semantic-conceptual analyses of Tom Stoppard's intellectual drama in the cultural-historical and literary context. This research is based on nine major works of the author and also includes some minor theatrical plays and a novel as an additional material. Within the framework of the complex approach employed in this work, drama is viewed as text comprising both the written and theatrical forms. "Play" on different levels (language, personages, structure) is one of the characteristic features of Stoppard's works, influencing dynamics of the meaning forming process, which is another key issue of the research. Due to its double nature, play in Stoppard's works is viewed either as the main genre characteristics of drama or as a source of the intellectual catharsis for the reader/viewer.
