Essay

The object of investigation is existential sentences. The purpose of the investigation is full analysis of structural, semantic and functional characteristics of existential sentences with "there+V+NP+(Loc)" construction in Early New English period. The methods include: inductive method, method of transformation analysis, method of linguistic description method of contextual analysis, quantitative method.The novelty of the received results lies in the fact that for the first time in the Ukrainian linguistics the full analysis of structural, semantic and functional characteristics of existential sentences within the framework of the Chomsky's Minimalist Program is carried out. The theoretical value of the dissertation is distinguished as a contribution to the general grammar theory of Germanic languages. It gives the definition of formal, grammatical, semantic, syntactic, communicative structure of existential sentence with the help of generative approach. The practical value of the dissertation can be defined as the ability to use its main results and conclusions in the courses of the History of English Language (Part "Syntax"), Theoretical Grammar (Part "Syntax", "Sentence Constituents"), Foundations of Generative Syntax and also in the research works in English philology.
