Essay

The dissertation is concerned with the research into the perception of the National Liberation War under Bohdan Khmel'nytsky leadership (1648-1657) found in the memoirs and diaries of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth nobility, the contemporaries and witnesses of those events. The author analyses the social environment, the traditions of writing memoirs in the 17th century and correlation between the nobility's autobiographical facts and biased interpretation of certain events and personalities. The explanations of the reasons of the conflict, features of the National Liberation War military campaigns, and the descriptions of the guerilla movement leaders and hostile mass in general by the contemporaries are studied on the basis of source materials.
