The thesis is a complex research into the evolution of West European private law from its emergence up to its modern unification. The origin and evolution of the concept of division of law into public and private law, impact of Roman law on the formation of West European private law in the Middle Ages, civil law codification in West European states in the 19th century and its development in the 20th century have been analyzed.
