The dissertation introduces a new approach to the comparative and typological analysis of blessings and curses in English, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Czech. The paper presents the verbal patterns of blessings and curses studied through the pragmatic, semantic, linguistic, and cultural aspects. It determines the external pragmatics of blessings and curses as illocutionary acts of certain communicative intention (optative directives and expressives). The internal pragmatics of the verbal patterns defined as blessings / curses highlights their cultural significance. In addition, the thesis deals with the spheres of motivation compared to point out common and divergent types of allomotives in English, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Czech blessings and curses.
