Interaction of the components in the {Y,Gd,Yb}-Zn-Al systems have been investigated for the first time by means of X-Ray phase and structural analisys. Isothermal cross-sections of the phase equilibria diagrams of these systems at 670 K have been constructed. Nineteen ternary compounds in the RE-Zn-Al systems have been synthesized for the first time. Crystal structures for 17 new compounds were determined from single crystal X-Ray and powder diffraction data. Five compounds are representatives of the new HoZn5Al3-type of structure. The existence of five earlier known compounds in these systems was confirmed. The limit compositions of the solid solutions based on the binary compounds and homogeneity ranges for ternary ones in investigated systems were determined. The investigation of the temperature dependence of magnetic succeptibility and specific heat revealed that Gd3Zn4,7Al6,3 and HoZn5Al3 compounds are paramagnets with antiferromagnetic ordering below 26 and 21 K, respectively. Yb3,51Zn32,18Al1,26 is diamagnet. The data for Yb4Zn20,3Al12,7 and YbZn8,5Al2,5 compounds indicate the mixed valence state of Yb atoms.
