Essay

We characterize the Holder-Zigmund classes on a segment in terms of best local approximation by simplest fractions. A criterion of differentiability of continuous functions and functions of the class L_p was established. It is shown that simplest Pade fractions are the limits of a sequence of simplest fractions of best uniform approximation. A criterion of simplest fractions of best uniform approximation to real continuous function on a segment was obtained.
