Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the investigation of image-mask and stage grotesque as techniques of Yosyp Hirniak's creative activity of an actor at the Berezil Theater during the period of 1922-1933. In this connection, the attention is focused on the stages of professional growth of the artist, and his artistic work is studied in the context of form-creating processes in the Berezil Theater; besides, Yosyp Hirniak's artistic work is proved to be representative of the principles of Les Kurbas' aesthetics. The peculiarities of stage mask and stage grotesque in the performing art of the 1920s - 1930s are summarized theoretically on the basis of research works by foreign and Ukrainian scientists. The analysis of Yosyp Hirniak's universal acting style, reflecting all the innovations present in the art of acting during the period of the 1900s - 1930s, was of a great importance for the investigation.
