Essay

This dissertation focuses on the comprehensive study of systemic (the ways the units under study are formed, derivational direction, kernel patterns of VN and DV's grammatical combinability, their semantics) and functional features (frequency of VN and DV, essentiality/non-essentiality of their frequency divergence within a certain word-building group pertaining to the units under examination, frequency distribution according to their rank correlation, frequency and occurrence of their grammatical combinability patterns) of English verbal nouns (VN) and denominative verbs (DV). There is a correlation between the frequency of the VN and DV under study and the occurrence of their kernel patterns. It has been established that the quantity of represented grammatical patterns does not depend on the VN and DV word-building group, but rather on its frequency. Apart from ascertaining the frequency of the lexico-semantic groups (LSG) of the units under study, the so-called diagnosing LSG, have also been established.
