The thesis deals with the problems related to substantiation of the development of steep seams based on the corrected rock pressure mechanism during shield mining. The work solves research-practice problem of current importance: location of mine workings that allows reducing costs for their drivage and maintenance. As a result of experimental investigations data has been obtained on rock pressure manifestation in development workings and geomechanical processes that occur in rock mass surrounding mine working when it is worked by shield units. Analysis and correction of all the data obtained makes it possible to work out and substantiate procedure for selection of the efficient location of workings taking into account features of the displacement of mine working outline and rock movement. Mathematical simulation which has been made confirms complete convergence of the experimental and analytical results that explains accuracy of the conclusions made and the obtained exponential dependences.
