Essay

The effect of magnetic field nonuniformity on plasma parameters and characteristics of HF and LF wave processes is examined experimentally. On the helicon plasma source with electromagnets, the mechanism of enhanced plasma production in a nonuniform magnetic field, due to formation of the zone with hot electrons, and a likely heating mechanism for these electrons were ascertained. The characteristics and the most likely driving mechanisms of LF ion-acoustic oscillations and HF oscillations in the pump sidebands were established in a discharge with a nonuniform field. On the compact source the methods for efficient generation of plasma and the emergent flux of accelerated ions were ascertained.
