Essay

This thesis focuses on the problem of integration of borrowings from the languages of North American Indians into modern American English. The author argues that particular perception of the world represented in the language and culture of American Indians triggers a number of ethnic stereotypes actualized in American English. It is proved that integration process of the Indian borrowings into American English is realized via semantic transformations of loan words, specificity of their derivation or word-forming paradigm and phraseological activity in American English. It is maintained that a peculiar feature of the integration process lies in obtaining by Indian borrowings as well as by their derivatives and phraseological units negative connotations in American English. Such phenomenon is determined by the influence of ethnic stereotypes. Key words: integration, ethnic stereotype, semantics, etymon, word-forming paradigm.
