Essay

Historical and cultural space of Kyiv is regarded along with its concert life, and a historical picture of Polish social and cultural environment of those days in Kyiv is reproduced. The concerts of Polish pianists, their content, amount and contribution made by them into music life of Kyiv in the end of XIX – beginning of XX century is studied here. The concerts of J. Hofmann, J. Slivinsky, V. Landovska, I. Paderevsky, L. Godovsky, A. Mikhalovsky, J. Turchinsky are covered in this study; it also provides the analysis of repertory of Polish pianists, gives their personal characteristics, indicates the level of media and public reaction, revealing also what was original in each artist’s contribution to development of music life in Kyiv and how their performances influenced the formation of Ukrainian piano school in either practical or educational aspect. The contribution is estimated here, which was made by activity of Polish pianists on tours both into development of concert, music and cultural life of Kyiv, and into activation of process of the city integration into European cultural space.
