Essay

Quantum-chemical calculations of the free ortho-bromobenzophenone molecule have been performed. The crystal structure of ortho-bromobenzophenone has been determined for the first time. Temperature dependence of integrated and time-resolved phosphorescence spectra of ortho-bromobenzophenone crystals has been measured. Within the range from 1.6 to 130 K, two monomeric band series from different conformational states of the excited molecule are observed. In the range 95 - 300 K a triplet excimer emission is observed. Integrated and time-resolved phosphorescence spectra of vitreous ortho-bromobenzophenone have been measured as a function of temperature. Unlike in the crystal, the triplet excimer in the glass forms even at the lowest temperature. The monomeric emission in the glass contains only one set of C=O stretch vibrational bands, which corresponds to transitions from the global excited energy minimum.
