Essay

This thesis focuses on the analysis of cognitive, semantic, syntactical and functional properties of lexical means which verbalize the megaconcept STATE in present-day English. The paper systematizes language units belonging to the part of speech denoting state. Such systematization stands as a result of singling out the lexemes on the basis of eight criteria. The results of the research determine the lexico-semantic organization within the bounds of megaconcept STATE. Taking into account the highly generalized and schematic notion of the meaning's conceptual basis, the thesis demonstrates the constituents of conceptual field STATE. The research outlines six author neologisms, which are not registered in dictionaries. Typical and atypical syntactical functions of the words of the category of state in fiction have been traced. The results of the research demonstrate the set of words of the category of state capable of combining with modificators. The frame of these modificators has been analyzed via statistic analysis. The gradation of cataconcepts and their frequency has been carried out. Key words: the words of the category of state, conceptual field STATE, hierarchical organization, concept, polysemy, frequency, periodicity.
