Essay

The thesis focuses on the overall analysis of cognitive and pragmatic peculiarities of a speech act of advice in Modern English. It has been shown that within the bounds of pragmatic paradigm advice can be regarded as a directive speech act characterized by benefactive orientation, equal relations between interlocutors, non-obligatory realization of advice. It has been also established that the communicative situation of advice includes both compulsory components (the subject and object of advice, advice itself, the assessment of advice, the reaction to advice) and the facultative ones (a request for advice, an inquiry about the permission to give advice, argumentation). The analysis of the lexical means of advice verbalization testifies to the fact that the illocutionary force of the speech act in question can be expressed explicitly, through direct speech acts, and implicitly, by indirect speech acts. The functional peculiarities of the speech acts under analysis manifest themselves through their various pragmatic modifications which contribute to the achievement of the desired perlocutionary effect. In cognitive terms the structure of the concept ADVICE has been analyzed, peculiarities of producing and perceiving advice have been highlighted, the influence of axiological and argumentative components of the communicative situation of advice on the perlocutionary effect has been traced.
