Essay

The main approaches to the problem of performativity, performative utterances and verbs have been revealed. The research has discovered that performativity in modern German can be realized through explicit, explicit-modified and implicit performative utterances which are characterized by definite structural-semantic and cognitive-pragmatic features, have different intentional orientation and fulfill various functions in discourse. Potential performative verbs of modern German have been classified. The dissertation defines the means intensifying and mitigating illocutionary force of performative utterances, extra-linguistic factors, their cognitive-pragmatic characteristics and national-cultural peculiarities.
