This thesis focuses on lingvocognitive and sociolinguistic peculiarities of the concept TERRORISM and specifies its actualizing in Modern English with the help of innovations. The research aims at revealing the formation of new derivational elements, analyzing the structural and semantic peculiarities of innovations and the ways of their formation, determining the mechanisms of semantic evolution. The means of verbalization of the concept TERRORISM reflect the perception of reality in the light of certain ideology and mentality. The conceptualization of warring parties takes place in terms of such eternal values as Good and Evil and is based on the dichotomy Occident : : Orient, reflecting the opposition between western and eastern civilizations. The investigation of neologisms allows revealing the ways, means and patterns of language enrichment. It also exposes the semantic properties of innovations and highlights the phenomenon of the war of language symbols which includes the war of form and the war of meaning. The war of meaning causes bilateral shift of concepts realized via the change of axiological polarity of lexemes. It is proved that the assimilation of lexical borrowings into English is due to their semantic evolution and derivational activity. Key words: concept TERRORISM, bilateral shift of concepts, innovation, the war of language symbols, borrowing.
