This dissertation studies a complex of difficult issues in the genre of fantasy twentieth-century literature. In particular, the genesis of this genre is examined, with special attention to Christian fantasy literature. This dissertation break new ground by using the broadest background of fantasy literature to analyse the complex and creative works of C.S.Lewis and to reveal the typological heritage within which the Christian fantasy genre developed. The genre of C.S. Lewis' fantasy novels is studied from various artistic levels (subject, problematics, plot, composition, characters, motives, time and space). In C.S. Lewis' hands the fantasy genre received a new direction with strongly Christian emphasis. Indeed, C.S.Lewis can be credited with creating the form of Christian fantasy literature and painted the way to further development of this genre.
