Essay

The research focuses on the contrastive analysis of the structure and semantics of derived locative nouns (DL), i.e. the derived nouns denoting locality, in German, Russian, French and Turkish. A comprehensive study of the potential of DL is based on the standard (literary) language in the synchronic perspective. In the course of the research the structural types of DL have been determined, the semantic classification of DL has been made, in which the semantic types and groups have been identified, the types of motivating stems, DL denotata, and formal and semantic constraints on their derivation have been described, the methods of word-building and the means to form DL in German, Russian, French and Turkish have been highlighted. The results of the semantic and morphological analysіs show the peculiarities of formation and semantics of DL in languages with different structure; the quantitative data and thorough analysis of the empirical material corroborate the conclusions made. Translingual and intercultural trends in word-building and semantics have been revealed and generalizations that can be used for the analysis of other thematic groups of words have been made, which contribute to the development of lexical typology and methodology of semantic and word-building studies.
