The paper focuses on the study of affixal verbal nouns denoting action in modern German, in particular on word-building, semantic, syntagmatic and paradigmatic aspects. Affixal verbal nouns denoting action have been considered in terms of interaction of the structural, word-building and semantic factors to promote further development of semantically oriented derivatology. Structural and semantic characterization of the underlying stem, affixes and derived verbal nouns denoting action has been presented. Intrinsic valency, paradigmatic and syntagmatic links of the derivative nouns within the semantic category of action have been revealed. A mechanism of building up semantic relationships among the derivative nouns denoting action has been disclosed. The semantic structure and functions of affixes of the verbal nouns under consideration have been analysed. The types and features of the derivational meaning of the verbal nouns denoting action, which is incorporated into their lexical meaning, have been determined. Mechanisms to form the lexical meaning have been described. Semantic classification of verbal nouns denoting action in modern German has been made, with semantic classes of derivative nouns distinguished.
