Essay

Direct and inverse problems of statistical optics are investigated, specifically the image formation and wavefront reconstruction in Shack - Hartmann wavefront sensor, and the light scattering on a rough surface of optical waveguide. The methods of optimal restoration are developed for continuous optical signal represented with its discrete image at the output of linear system. The optimization procedures are discussed for wavefront restoration in Shack - Hartmann sensor. The aberrations of the optical wavefronts, which were obtained when testing the simulators of the human eye optical system, are analyzed. The statistical model of refractive index fluctuations in core/cladding interface of optical waveguide is developed. The model takes account of the normal statistics of the surface separating the core and the cladding. It is demonstrated that scattering in the planar waveguide with such type of perturbation results in some depolarization of the light. The model of radiation losses in optical nanofibers, induced by the scattering on the rough surface of the fiber, is proposed. The value of such losses is estimated.
