Essay

The Thesis for Scholarly Degree deals with the structural and semantic analysis of shortenings in German, the forms whereby they can be expressed and the functions of fragmented units in the newspaper text. It also shows the formation of terminology and denomination of shortenings and characterizes specific features of nomination using the contracted word. The optimal forming of shortenings is due to a number of criteria: graphic, phonetic, morphological, semantic, and communicative-and-pragmatic. The rank status of these criteria is different and depends on the structural type of the contracted unit.
