Object of a research - a process of functioning of small mechanical engineering enterprises. Purpose of a research ? a further development of theoretical basis of a strategic management of the activity of small enterprises in the mechanical engineering sector, and also a development of methodological positions and scientific-practical recommendations of a stable functioning of those enterprises in conditions of the competitive environment. Methods of a research: generalization, analysis, synthesis, morphological decomposition; statistical and graphical; system and complex approach; network planning; cluster analysis; factor analysis; expert; SWOT-analysis. Theoretic and practical results: improvement of scientific-practical recommendations of the strategic management of small mechanical engineering enterprises in conditions of the competitive environment. Scientific innovation: improved of methodical aspects of the strategic management of the activity of small enterprises, which are based on interconnection of organizational- legal forms, management levels, mechanisms of the management, methods and directions of researching of the activity of small business by types of their organization and integration forms; improved the methodical approach of SWOT -analysis realization of the activity of small enterprises; improved the approach of the management of investment risks on small enterprises; got a further development a definition of a concept "small business", that was added with a new aspect such as an operativeness - a small enterprise's ability to react quickly on changes of the external environment; got a further development scientific-practical basis of the monitoring of the financial condition of small enterprises. A level of an application - practical recommendations were applicated into a practical work of small mechanical engineering enterprises: factory "Sokolniki" (Kharkiv), factory "TORA" (Kharkiv), and also into the educational process of Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics. A sphere of using - a strategic management of small mechanical engineering enterprises; scientific- research establishments; Ministry of industrial policy of Ukraine; the main administration of the economy of Kharkiv regional state administration and Administration of business and consumer market of the department of the economy and communal property of Kharkiv city council.
