Essay

The canid auditory bulla was found to consist of five bones, including the ventral entotympanic uniquely shared by Canidae. This bone gives origin to a same-named sinus, which penetrates into the adjacent bones to form a compound four-component intrabullar septum. The infraorders of Carnivora differ in bone composition of their auditory bullae, and their intrabullar sinuses and septa are not homologous. The revealed characters of the canid auditory bulla hold promise for inquiring into the phylogeny of the family
