Essay

The dissertation offers source criticism of "The Refutation of All Heresies" - the polemical writing of Roman bishop Hippolytus. The focus of the author's thesis is the problem of the origin of Hippolytus' so called "special material". Critical analysis of "The Refutation" shows that the bulk of data concerning Gnostic sects Hippolytus borrows from one literary source. This source was a Gnostic paraphrase, commenting on the older writings. Presumably, it was Roman presbyter Florin, who had composed the paraphrase in Rome at the turn of II-III centuries.
