Chujan S. Actualization of the Category of Transitivity in the English Discourse (Case Study of Media and Fictional Texts)

This thesis focuses on revealing the means of actualization of transitivity in the English fictional and media texts and studies verbal transitivity in modern English in the frameworks of discoursive approach. The transitivity of the English verb is analyzed in different types of text. The measure of transitivity defined by statistical method enables to outline the boundaries of "neutral", "strong transitive" and "weak transitive" subclasses of verbs; the verbs of different lexico-semantic groups are included into the corresponding subclasses according to their measure of transitivity. Analysis of the functional peculiarities of transitive verbs presupposes taking into consideration lexico-semantic groups within different subclasses of transitivity in media and fiction texts. It has been proved that transitive verbs intensify text modality via the use of their different semantic classes with or without modal verbs.
