The research is devoted to the linguo-stylistic and structurally compositional peculiarities of the English literary anecdote. This type of anecdote displays correlations of genre with the literary texts of small epic forms. Its conceptual nature has been defined and discourse structure modeled. The dissertation paper reveals the methodological procedure of the study of the linguistic objectification of the ironic effect in the anecdote, and defines the functional side of the punch line and describes the structural and semantic range of the effect de surprise.
