Essay

. Object of the study: iodine-deficient disorders in Ukraine population. 2. Aim of the study: based on criteria of iodine deficit degree, proposed by the WHO, assess the iodine status of the population of South-East regions of Ukraine, and develop recommendations for prophylaxis of iodine-deficient disorders in women of reproductive age, according to population needs for this microelement. Methods of investigation and equipment: epidemiological, biochemical, instrumental, clinical, statistical methods; USI device “Aloka 500 milrus”, analyzer “Ekotest-2VA”. Theoretical and practical results: a combined estimation has been conducted, of iodine status of the population of South-East regions of Ukraine; new data have been obtained about thyroid pathology prevalence among children and women of reproductive age. The level of iodized salt and iodine preparations consumption by different population categories has been studied. The impact of different methods of iodine prophylaxis has been analyzed, on iodine status of newborns, schoolchildren, pregnant and non-pregnant women. The rationale of introducing iodine prophylaxis in the population of these regions has been justified. Novelty: for the first time among the population of South-East regions of Ukraine, a mild degree of iodine deficit has been established, which under conditions of lack of iodine prophylaxis is significantly enhanced in pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers, newborns, infants. For the first time in Ukraine, the importance of iodine intake with breast milk to ensure a normal iodine status to newborns has been analyzed. Degree of introduction: the study results are used to develop a regional programme for liquidation of iodine deficit and prevention of its consequences. A patent has been obtained for a useful model registered under No. 57234. Field of application: endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology.
