The thesis suggests a new approach to comparative and historical study of semantic structure of binary concepts BEAUTIFUL/UGLY in English and Ukrainian, introduces methodology for contrasting the semantic structure of binary concepts BEAUTIFUL/UGLY in both languages, identifies common and different tendencies in formation of primitive semantic and conceptual features of semantic structure of binary concepts BEAUTIFUL/UGLY in contrasted languages, compares the semantic content of nuclear, around-nuclear, and peripheral part of semantic structure of binary concepts BEAUTIFUL/UGLY in synchronic aspect, reveals changes in the development of meaning of concept names BEAUTIFUL/UGLY, their lexemes-verbalizators, proverbs and comparative phraseological units in English and Ukrainian: from the radial-chain mechanism for coupling of meaning in the semantic structure of the concept - to the radial.
