This thesis focuses on the study of multilevel linguistic means expressing the category of the mystic in the English Gothic novel of the 18th century. The research proceeds from the conceptual category as a universal notional constant and its linguistic interpretation to the functional semantic field as its systemic linguistic presentation. Taking a synchronic approach, the thesis singles out linguistic means of semantic interpretation pertaining to the conceptual category of the mystic and analyses them within the framework of field theory. Etymological and cultural data are incorporated into the analysis to achieve completeness of the research.
