Essay

The May Fourth poetry arose on the basis of longstanding traditions, but at the same time it was expressing new aspirations and views of Chinese people. That's why the May Fourth poetry is a mixture of traditions and new tendencies. The main role in the development of the May Fourth poetry was played by contact links, which influenced this poetry through translated works of European, American and Russian authors. Due to the influence of Western literature such literary trends as romanticism, realism and symbolism appeared in China during the May Fourth Movement, and due to them different literary groups were formed among Chinese writers.
