Essay

Within Ukrainian musicology the dissertation provides the first attempt of complex research of V. Kostenko' personality in the history of Ukrainian musical culture of the first half of 20th century, creation of complete and integral scientific biography of the artist. The extensive use of archival documents and materials, method complex of biographical reconstruction allowed the holistic study of creative legacy of the artist (composer, music-critical, philosophical, epistolary legacies) by origins. The analysis of archived documents allowed to find out biographic inaccuracies that may exist in scientific literature and to make most complete description of printed music editions and bibliography of artist's works. First in Ukrainian musicology a complex of compositions was analyzed and involved to the scientific and cultural turnover: String Quartets №№ 3,4,6,7,8; String Trio; 12 Solo-singings on poems L.Ukrainka, Symphonic Poem "Taiha", Symphonic Suite, Concert for Violin and Orchestra; philosophical pieces: the poem "Prorok Svitovyda", philosophical conversations "Matter - Life - Man", autobiographic story "My life", epistolary inheritance. The attempt to determine contribution, place and role of the composer in the Ukrainian musical culture of the first half of 20th century has been realized in this study form the point of modern scientific positions.
