This thesis presents the results of the lingo-cognitive study of conceptual metaphors that make foundations for metaphorical expressions functioning as cliches in the English scholarly text. The study aims to identify conceptual mechanisms that underlie the cliche-metaphors. The object of the study is conceptual metaphors in cliches of the English scholarly text; its subject is the conceptual models, ranges, and scopes of these metaphors. The data corpus is analyzed using the body of methods that integrates basic insights of the conceptual metaphor theory, frame semantics, and cognitive grammar. The scholarly novelty of the thesis is that it first views scholarly cliche-metaphors within the boundaries of a single conceptual sphere and offers a conceptual model of this sphere. The thesis also provides new ways of distinguishing and presenting conceptual metaphors that cover wide groupings of language data. As the outcome of the study, comes a list of conceptual domains and formed on their basis conceptual metaphors used to think of various aspects of the scholarly research. The insights and conclusions of the thesis make up an important theoretical contribution into the frame semantics and the conceptual metaphor theory. The work might get its practical application in the university courses of lexicology, general linguistics, and English scholarly communication.
