Essay

The thesis addresses an issue of reading Shakespeare in program symphonic music on basis of works of XIX century romantic composers, such as: F. Mendelssohn, R. Schuman, G. Berlioz, F. Liszt, B. Smetana, A. Dvorzhak and R. Strauss, through the perspective of the K. G. Jung's theory of archetypes. The topic relevance is determined by comprehending the role and value of the genius of Shakespeare in works of XIX century artists, his influence on shaping their constructive method as one of the key stages of formation of a composer. The drama specifics in reading the Shakespeare's works in the leading genres of XIX century program symphonic music are studied in this work with regard to archetypes effect. The viewpoint of the research is determined by the fact that the romantic symphonic music, led by a symphonic overture and a symphonic poem, represented first instrument perusal of Shakespeare. The chosen problematic aspect allows to analyze and reveal not only individual specific features of musical transcriptions of Shakespeare in every particular case, but also composers' collective perception of the genius of Shakespeare for musical aesthetics of romanticism in general.
