Essay

The dissertation focuses on the study of monody to polyphony transition typology in terms of musical cultures in the Arab-Persian tradition. To this end, the dissertation offers a comparative analysis of samples of musical cultures in the European and Arab-Persian traditions as regards their typological and distinctive features in the monody to polyphony transition, a description of specific features of monody maqam thought in a number of cultures in the Arab-Persian tradition and a characterization of the style-forming features of Crimean Tatar music that are at the root of the specific nature of polyphony in Crimean Tatar composers’ professional music. The dissertation considers the immediate presence of monody traditions in the European and Arab-Persian cultures, historical irreversibility of polyphonic forms based on them, the counterpoint system of vertical harmonizing of melodic voice materials, the priority of the polyphonic factor in the formation of polyphonic texture as typological universals of the monody to polyphony transition.
