The thesis deals with the rhetoric functions of set phrases in the British prime ministers' speeches delivered in the era of globalization. The study proves that the development of mass media and frequent British prime ministers' addresses to the international audience determine the reduction in the use of idiomatic units. The rhetorical levels of text formation reveal new functions of set phrases. Thematic units are divided into inventive-elocutionary, representing practical activity and interpersonal relationship from different perspectives, and inventive-dispositional introducing textual blocks of different size. Dispositional idioms are divided into communicative, reflecting an author's interaction with the audience, and structural, organizing the contents. The elocutionary functions of idioms, meant for the verbal ornamentation of speeches, are appealing, activating the cognitive abilities of the addressee; referential, representing a situation from the topological, temporal or characterizing perspective; evaluative, expressing an author's attitude to the contents; emotive, reflecting a speaker's feelings.
