Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the research of the communicative phenomenon of moderation in English fiction discourse. Moderation is viewed as communicative-pragmatic category which exists at discourse level. Its categorical meaning is communicative intention of reserve regularly manifested by English speakers in a special type of utterance - moderated utterances. It is estimated that the above сommunicative intention can be realized through such pragmatic varieties as mitigation, hedging, understatement, approximation or devaluation which make up five communicative pragmatic variants of moderation. Moderators are defined as illocutionary markers of the speaker's communicative intention of reservе and analyzed as to their pragmatic potential, pragmatic specialization and communicative vector. The category of moderation is structured as a functional-pragmatic macrofield, its structure is presented as a system with five embedded interrelated functional-pragmatic microfields, boarders between microfields are set and their systemic relations are analyzed.
