The object is the category of mentality. The aim is analysis and reconstruction the category of mentality on the basis of retrospection and evolutionary development. The methods are dialectical, hermeneutic, interdisciplinary approach, generalization, comparative analysis. The study contains an analysis of conditions and characteristics of sources of the concept of "mentality" in the context of the emergence and development, with specific key stages. The paper shows the origins and sources of origin of the philosophical content of the concept of “mentality” in ancient philosophy, its place and role in the in the process of understanding the world, shows the transformation of its importance in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and modern times. Characterized in detail the ideological and theoretical, socio-cultural background and the basic orientation of research the concept of "mentality" in the European philosophical thought of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly the degree of understanding and developing the category of "mentality" in the twentieth century "New historical science" and domestic researchers. The historical and philosophical analysis features of the characteristics of the genesis of the category "mentality" makes it possible to establish integrity, semantic content, logical completeness of the concept of mentality and to define its conceptual and categorical status, mark the prospects of further research.
