The thesis is devoted to the analyses of the lexical means of time representation in the modern English language system and publicistic discourse of the early XXI c. The thesis is based on the principles of cognitive semantics and discourse studies. The aim of the dissertation lies in the revelation of the cognitive-semantic and functional characteristics of the lexical units with the temporality meaning in the modern English language system and English publicistic discourse. The object of the research is the lexical means of time representation in modern English. The subject of the research is the cognitive-semantic and functional characteristics of the English temporal units. The scientific novelty of the thesis lies in the first attempt to determine the role of the image schemas path and cycle which organize the system of sensory and sociocultural temporal concepts and to determine their discourse realization. The theoretical value of the thesis lies in its contribution to the development of the cognitive semantics. The results of the thesis can be practically used in lectures in lexicology and stylistics of the modern English, in specialized courses in cognitive linguistics and discourse studies.
