Essay

This is the research of the development of the French integral nationalism, preformed in the large chronological scope embracing nearly seventy years. The investigation is based on theoretical works of founders of French integral nationalism, political programs of nationalistic organisations, and legal base of Vichy regime gathered by the Candidate. The research uses the methodology of "contextual history of concepts" in order to seize the use and abuse of the basic element of the French integral nationalism ideology, namely the concept of French decadence. Its strategic re-evaluations reveal several phases of the development of the of French integral nationalism ideology. Next the development of the French integral nationalism of inter-war period is considered. Owing to the changes of the French social stratification, two currents of the French integral nationalism appeared, both using the concept of the French decadence in its proper way. After the French defeat of 1940 a new government, the one of integral nationalists, was formed. It tried to organise some deep social reforms, named "National Revolution", attempting to reorganise the French society according to traditionalistic principles. The "National Revolution" was presented as a salvation after a long-term rule of liberalism, corrupting the French community. Nevertheless, the practical implementation of integral nationalistic ideals appeared to be disastrous, and the forced re-entrance into traditionalistic way of life repulsed the French. After the traumatic experience of 1940-1944, the French society willingly embraced the liberal values. This finished the modernisation crises and made integral nationalism irrelevant.
