3. The thesis reveals cognitive and communicative aspects of nominative-referring units (NRU), functioning in contemporary American newspaper discourse which in the context of globalization forms the world public opinion. Being a combination of determiners with nominative units, NRUs simultaneously perform two functions in American newspaper discourse: nominative, meant for naming and characterizing extralinguistic reality, and referring, embodied in different ways of including referents into a described situation. The cognitive aspect of NRUs consists in their formation according to the patterns capturing the order of human sensori-motor interaction with the environment: identifying, representing the structure of proper and address names, as well as that of definite and demonstrative NRUs; relative, reflecting the structure of the units with proper names in the genitive case and possessive pronouns; characterizing, underlying the structure of indefinite and quantitative NRUs. The communicative aspect of NRUs is embodied in the order of their use according to the discursive-nominative strategies aimed at forming comprehensive images of individuals, groups of people and events. Key words: nominative-referring unit (NRU), definite NRU, indefinite NRU, genitive NRU, newspaper discourse, text, discursive-nominative strategy, discursive-nominative tactic.
